The Red Planet Blues
The Blue Canary
The Blue Canary. A hot jazz club in downtown Juno, this place is packed every night of the week, but none more so than Friday. As soon as you step in through the entrance, past the pair of black-suited bouncers, the noise and cacophony of a live club hits you. The club is packed with people sitting at tables, smoking, drinking, and dancing before the stage where a full band is jamming out a lively jazz tune. A four-to-the-floor bass beat pulses through the track, reverberating deep in your chest.
A full bar stands opposite of the stage, packed with patrons ordering drinks. A spiral staircase winds up to a terrace above the bar, offering a great view of the stage, and an additional lounge for more intimate discussion. A part of the Blue Canary’s charm is its rustic feel. Rather than being decked out in all sorts of pulsating lights, like most clubs these days, the Blue Canary has antique lamps that offer a warm and dim glow, like a gin joint from the 1920’s. The furniture accentuates this, sacrificing modern design for gaudy, Victorian-era designs.
While the brick and mortar aspect may be old fashioned, the club is fully modern in its technology. The names of the waitresses and bartenders float above their heads in your augmented reality display. An icon flashes in the corner of your vision, linking you to the bar menu should you wish to order a drink. Some of the patrons are displaying their personal information; “Single,” “Looking 4 Fun,” “Buy Me a Drink?” etc.
